Which Australia Visa Do You Need from Dubai? Tourist, Business, Student, Work and Family Options Explained (2026)

Which Australia Visa Do You Need Dubai? (2026 Guide)

Which Australia visa do you need Dubai? Ask ten people and you’ll get ten different answers, because the right visa depends on why you’re going, which passport you hold and how long you want to stay. Where you live matters much less than most people think. This guide goes through each option in plain language, with current fees, realistic waiting times and the mistakes we see UAE applicants make again and again.

So, which Australia visa do you need?

If you’re going on holiday, visiting family or attending a business meeting, you’ll most likely apply for the Visitor visa (subclass 600). The exception is when your passport is on Australia’s ETA or eVisitor list. If you’re going to study, you need a Student visa (subclass 500). For work, either an Australian employer sponsors you (subclass 482) or you score enough points for a skilled visa (subclass 189 or 190). If your husband, wife or partner is an Australian citizen or permanent resident, you’re looking at a Partner visa.

Here’s the whole picture in one table.

Do UAE residents need a visa to visit Australia?

Almost always, yes. Australia looks at the passport in your hand, not the Emirates ID in your wallet. Living in Dubai doesn’t make you eligible for the quick electronic options.

There are three routes, and your passport picks the one for you:

  • ETA (subclass 601): for passports on Home Affairs’ ETA list, such as the UK, US, Canada, Japan, South Korea and Singapore. You apply in the official Australian ETA app and pay a AUD 20 service charge.
  • eVisitor (subclass 651): free, and open to certain European passports.
  • Visitor visa (subclass 600): everyone else, including Emirati passport holders and most nationalities living in the UAE.

The UAE isn’t on the ETA list, so an Emirati passport means applying for the subclass 600. The lists do change, so check the Home Affairs site for your passport before you start.

How does the Australia tourist visa work from Dubai?

The Tourist stream of the Visitor visa covers holidays, visits to friends and family, and cruises. Home Affairs decides whether to grant you 3, 6 or 12 months. You apply online through an ImmiAccount while you’re outside Australia, so most people never visit an embassy.

The government fee is AUD 250 for applications made from outside Australia. Apply from inside the country and it jumps to AUD 630. Either way, it isn’t refunded if the visa is refused. Biometrics, a medical exam, translations and insurance cost extra, but only if they apply to you.

On timing, Home Affairs figures from September 2026 showed about half of Tourist stream applications decided in roughly 2 to 3 weeks and 90% within about 5 weeks. That includes any time spent waiting for you to send more information. Please don’t buy a non-refundable ticket until the visa is actually granted.

What the officer is really looking at

They’re trying to answer one question: will this person visit and leave? Everything in your file feeds that answer.

  • Your reason for going. It should be clear and believable for someone with your job and income.
  • Your money. There’s no official minimum balance. You need enough for the trip, your flights home and what you’ll spend there.
  • Your life in the UAE. A steady job, a valid residence visa, family and commitments all help.
  • Your history. Earlier trips help. Any previous visa refusal must be declared, every time.
  • Health and character. You might be asked for a medical or a police certificate.

How to apply from the UAE

  1. Check that your passport isn’t on the ETA or eVisitor list.
  2. Create an ImmiAccount and pick Visitor visa (subclass 600), Tourist stream, applying outside Australia.
  3. Fill in the forms and upload clear, colour scans.
  4. Pay the application charge online.
  5. Give biometrics or do a health check only if Home Affairs asks for it in your account.
  6. Wait for the decision and read the conditions before you book flights.

Can I go to Australia for business with a visitor visa?

Yes, for short trips. The Business Visitor stream of subclass 600 suits meetings, conferences, negotiations and looking at business opportunities. The fee is AUD 250 for applications made outside Australia.

What you can’t do is work. That means no employment with an Australian company, no paid services and no selling directly to the public. A lot of Dubai professionals get caught here, so if the trip involves anything that sounds like a job, stop and check.

If you’re flying in for short-term specialist work, like installing or repairing equipment, the Temporary Work (Short Stay Specialist) visa (subclass 400) is the right one. It costs AUD 535 from 1 July 2026. Staying longer or running a business in Australia is a different visa again.

What do you need for an Australian student visa from the UAE?

The Student visa (subclass 500) covers full-time study with a registered Australian provider, from English courses up to postgraduate degrees. Plenty of Dubai families start here when their child is finishing school.

The fee is AUD 2,500 for the main applicant from 1 July 2026, up from AUD 2,000. Tuition, health cover and any medicals come on top.

You’ll need:

  • A Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) from a CRICOS-registered provider.
  • Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the full length of the visa.
  • A Genuine Student statement. This replaced the old Genuine Temporary Entrant test for student visas on 23 March 2024. You explain why this course, why Australia and how it fits your future. Generic answers get refused.
  • Proof of funds. At last review, Home Affairs’ living-cost figure was AUD 29,710 a year for a single student, plus tuition and travel. Check the Department’s financial capacity page for the current number.
  • English test results if your course asks for them, plus health and character checks.

The rules that changed on 2 October 2026. Most temporary visa holders who are already in Australia can no longer lodge a student visa application there. Students who already hold a student visa can’t add family members after the visa is granted. Bringing a partner or children on a new application is also much harder now, with narrow exceptions such as certain PhD applicants. If you’re hoping to move with your family, check your exact situation on the Home Affairs student visa changes page before you pay a deposit.

Decisions can take longer than for visitor visas, and demand builds ahead of the February and July intakes. Apply as soon as your CoE arrives.

Can you work in Australia from the UAE?

There are a few real routes, and one that’s no longer open.

Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482). This replaced the Temporary Skill Shortage visa on 7 December 2024. An approved Australian employer has to nominate you, and you can stay up to four years. The fee is AUD 4,015 from 1 July 2026, and the Core Skills stream salary threshold is roughly AUD 79,500, indexed every 1 July. Published processing times for the Core Skills stream have ranged from about 2 months to 10 months.

Skilled Independent (189) and Skilled Nominated (190). These are points-tested permanent visas. You submit an Expression of Interest in SkillSelect, you need a positive skills assessment for an eligible occupation, and you need enough points. 65 is the pass mark, but invitations tend to go to people who score higher. The 189 needs no sponsor, while the 190 needs state or territory nomination. Fees are about AUD 6,135 to 6,140. You can apply from the UAE, and skilled UAE work experience can count.

Employer-sponsored permanent residence (subclass 186). Employers can also nominate you straight for permanent residence. The fee is AUD 6,140 from 1 July 2026.

Business Innovation and Investment (subclass 188). This one is closed to new applications, so don’t build a plan around it.

One warning. Never fly in on a visitor visa and start working. It breaks the visa conditions and can lead to cancellation and trouble with future applications.

Which visa is for visiting or joining family?

Visiting relatives. Most people use the Tourist stream with an invitation letter and proof of the host’s status in Australia. The Sponsored Family stream is a separate option where an eligible Australian sponsor backs your visit, and Home Affairs may ask for a security bond. It also costs AUD 250 but usually takes longer.

Joining a partner. Spouses and de facto partners of Australian citizens, permanent residents or eligible New Zealand citizens use Partner visas (309/100 from outside Australia, 820/801 from inside). The fee is AUD 11,710 from 1 July 2026. The weight of the application is the evidence that your relationship is genuine and ongoing, so shared finances, a shared home and a history together matter.

What documents should a UAE resident prepare?

Your file should match your purpose. A tourist file and a student file shouldn’t look alike, and officers notice when they do.

VisaCore documents
Tourist or Business VisitorPassport valid for the whole trip, UAE residence visa and Emirates ID, 3 to 6 months of bank statements, salary slips, employer NOC or leave letter, trade licence if you’re self-employed, itinerary, accommodation or host details, plus an invitation letter for business trips
Sponsored FamilySponsor’s identity and status proof, invitation letter, evidence of your relationship, sponsor’s financial documents
Student 500CoE, OSHC, Genuine Student answers, academic records, English test results, proof of funds, passport
Skills in Demand 482Employer nomination details, evidence of skills and experience, English evidence, police certificates, a health exam if requested
Skilled 189 or 190Skills assessment, English test, SkillSelect invitation, work evidence, police certificates
PartnerRelationship evidence, identity documents, sponsor documents, police certificates, health checks

Documents that aren’t in English usually need certified translations. Scan everything clearly, in colour.

Why do Australian visas get refused for UAE applicants?

Refusals rarely come from one big problem. More often it’s a handful of small things that together make the officer doubt your story.

  • Weak ties to the UAE. A recent job change, a short stay in the country or no family here can suggest you might not go home.
  • Money that doesn’t add up. Irregular deposits, a very low balance, or a large amount that appeared just before you applied.
  • A vague plan. A thin itinerary, or an invitation that doesn’t fit your profile.
  • An undeclared refusal. Leaving out a past refusal can lead to a new one and affect later applications.
  • Documents that disagree. Different job titles, salaries or dates in different papers.
  • A copy-paste Genuine Student statement. If it could belong to anyone, it counts for nothing.
  • A missed medical deadline. If Home Affairs asks for a health check, finish it on time.

If you’ve been refused, work out why before you try again. The same file usually gets the same answer, and you must declare the earlier refusal.

A quick way to choose

  • Travelling for a few weeks or months, with a job and home in the UAE: Visitor 600, Tourist stream.
  • Going to meetings or a conference, with no work involved: Visitor 600, Business Visitor stream.
  • Holding a UK, US, Canadian or other ETA-listed passport: look at the ETA (601) first.
  • Holding an eligible European passport: look at the free eVisitor (651).
  • Already offered a place on a course: Student 500.
  • Have an Australian employer ready to sponsor you: Skills in Demand 482.
  • No employer, but strong skills and a good points score: 189 or 190.
  • Married to an Australian citizen or permanent resident: Partner visa.

Mistakes we’d tell a friend to avoid

  1. Booking non-refundable flights before the visa is granted.
  2. Picking the wrong stream and losing a fee that can’t be refunded.
  3. Sending bank statements that don’t match your normal income.
  4. Reusing a Genuine Student statement from the internet.
  5. Ignoring a biometrics or medical request sitting in your ImmiAccount.
  6. Trusting an old fee table. Most fees rose by around 25% on 1 July 2026.

It depends on your purpose and passport. Tourists and business visitors use the Visitor visa (subclass 600) unless their passport is on the ETA or eVisitor list. Students need subclass 500, workers need subclass 482 or a skilled visa, and partners use Partner visas.

Can I apply for an Australian visa online from the UAE?
Yes. Most Australian visas, including the Visitor visa, are applied for online through ImmiAccount. Home Affairs may ask for biometrics or a medical depending on your case.

How much is the Australia tourist visa from the UAE?
The government fee is AUD 250 when you apply from outside Australia, from 1 July 2026. It isn’t refunded if you’re refused. Convert it to AED at the day’s rate and add any biometrics, medical, insurance or service fees.

How long does an Australian tourist visa take?
Home Affairs figures from September 2026 showed roughly half of Tourist stream applications decided in about 2 to 3 weeks and 90% in about 5 weeks. Check the live processing times tool for the latest.

How much bank balance do I need?
There’s no official minimum. You have to show you can pay for the trip and your return travel. Several months of statements with regular salary credits look better than a balance topped up just before applying.

Is travel insurance compulsory?
It isn’t a document you must upload, but Home Affairs strongly recommends health insurance. Student visa holders must have OSHC.

Yes, but declare the refusal and fix the reasons behind it first.

How early should I apply?
At least 6 to 8 weeks before you travel, and earlier for student intakes and holiday periods.
